Dia de Los Muertos Altar San Juan College ENLACE

FIRST BOOK - 2017 Estela and Raúl Mora Award

First Book announced the winner of the 2017 Estela and Raúl Mora Award for the year’s most exemplary El día de los niños/El día de los libros, celebration:
Mattawa Elementary School of Mattawa, WA.

According to an event volunteer, “The event focused on drawing parents to the school library to see the collection of Spanish and bilingual books available to their children.  Circulation for these titles is low – we wanted children and parents to understand the importance of reading books together in both English and their heritage language.”

First Book is a nonprofit social enterprise that provides new books, learning materials, and other essentials to children in need. Since its founding in 1992, First Book has distributed more than 170 million books and educational resources to programs and schools serving children from low-income families.

El día de los niños/El día de los libros, or Día, was founded by author and poet Pat Mora in 1996. REFORMA was the first organizational partner to promote Día, a year-long commitment to literacy and children, with culminating celebrations in April. REFORMA annually awarded the Estela and Raúl Mora Award from 2000-2014. Since 2016, the Mora Award has been coordinated by First Book and recognizes schools and programs with outstanding Día programs.

National Board from ALA

REFORMA, The National Association to Promote Library and Information Services to Latinos and the Spanish-Speaking, an affiliate organization of the American Library Association, cordially invites you to join them in Puerto Rico for RNCVI, REFORMA’s Sixth National Conference.
