“Viva Frida,” the author and illustrator Yuyi Morales

If they hadn’t existed in real life, Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera might well have been dreamed up by a writer of children’s books. There was Diego, round and enormous, sought out by world leaders and captains of industry for his equally outsize talent, able to sit on a scaffold for 36 straight hours painting murals intended to change the course of history. There was Frida, tiny and broken-bodied, enduring physical agony to paint the story of her inner life with a sensuous fury that brought her international renown. Then there was their love and marriage, as passionate and treacherous as any romance between two Greek demigods.
